"They are so popular because they are traditional, natural designs, not tricked up with railroad ties and funny bunkers, and the place is run like a gracious, old-style resort."

In 2003, the resort conducted a $3.5 million golf course renovation on both courses. The most significant project was the installation of a new irrigation system on both courses.
The crews renovated the greenside bunkers by removing old sand, reestablishing the original perimeters, installing new drains, installing one-inch thick fiber mesh that holds new sand in place and placing new sod on the bunker faces. Tee boxes were renovated with crews stripping the grass, leveling the box and then installing new sod. Fairways were being reseeded with a hybrid Bermuda grass that stands up better to the summer heat.
A new pro shop has been completed in 2005 and a staff of top professionals is on hand to assist guests in improving their golf game.
In 2007, the Silverado Resort received the
"Napa County Green Award."

Every year in October, more than fifty thousand golf lovers would come out to watch the Transamerica PGA Senior Golf Championship at the Silverado Country Club and Resort in the Napa Valley.
The South Course (6,685 yards, par 72), which hosted the Champions Tour event due mainly to clubhouse proximity, demands more accuracy than its sibling, thanks to tighter fairways. Hillier terrain often leaves you with uneven lies and means frequent changes in elevation.
The South course has creeks and ponds on eleven holes and elevated, tiered greens, the designer's trademark. A 500-yard, par-five dogleg obstructed by tall pines, the 18th hole ends in a picturesque garden setting below the verandah of the mansion, on a green guarded by yawning, Sahara-like bunkers. Arnold Palmer thrilled Transamerica crowds in 1993 when he eagled the 18th on the first and final rounds. At the 1999 tournament, David Duval nearly gave his father, Bob Duval, heart failure when he appeared, as a surprise, as his dad's caddy on the first tee.

It has been more than 50 years since the first foursome teed off on the Silverado Resort golf course. Since then golfers of varying abilities ranging from novice to professional have played one of Golf Digest magazine’s top 75 golf resorts in America.
Construction of the Silverado golf course began in 1953 under the supervision of designer Ben Harmon. In May 1955 the original 18-hole course opened and was the centerpiece for the resort’s development for many years. In 1966, son of famed golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Robert Trent Jones Jr. debuted his talents by redesigning and reconfiguring the facility to feature two distinct 18-hole championship courses. Both courses are traditional in their design and allow for the natural flow of the Napa Valley to help develop their character.
An excellent way to enjoy Silverado's natural beauty is to play the two, 18-hole Napa Valley Wine Country golf courses, each in the distinctive style of their architect, Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

Dozens of century-old, overhanging trees line the fairways of the two 18-hole, Robert Trent Jones, Jr. courses at Silverado. The 6,896-yard North layout is known for deceiving sidehill lies and more than thirteen crossings of Milliken Creek. Despite being 200 yards longer, the North Course is generally less penal, with level fairways and fewer hazards.
Silverado has been the site of both PGA Men’s Tour and Champion’s Tour tournaments. The North Course was host to the Kaiser International Open Invitational from 1968 through 1976 and the Anheuser-Busch Golf Classic from 1977 through 1980. Winners of the tournaments were some of golf’s most famous names including Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson and Ben Crenshaw.
The North Course (6,900 yards, par 72) is the more traditional and longer of the two, and is also the more challenging. There's no easy start here, whether it's on the 436-yard opener, or on the 418-yard 10th. Bring your driver -- you'll use it often.
