The Red Course

local folks consider the Red course
to be their favorite layout.

The Red Course forces golfers to use strategy and shot placement, rather than driving for show. Featuring 14 water holes with fairways winding around several lakes, the course provides breath-taking beauty and exhilarating challenges, without intimidating length. Many local folks consider the Red course to be their favorite layout at Doral. This course hosted the LPGA in 2001 for the Office Depot Championship.

The course is tailor-made for women. Built in 1962, the Red was renovated in 1987 to its current form. At 6,146 yards from the tips as a par-70, length isn't a problem here, but that doesn't mean the course is a pushover. What is appreciated however is the wonderful variety in design, with an equal number of holes shaped to the left and to the right, and the incredibly beautiful landscaping that is consistent throughout the layout.

Water comes into play on 14 of the 18 holes and many of the greens are elevated, a trademark at Doral, and demand crisp approach shots to score well. Six par-3s (three each nine) and just three par-5s make for an interesting mix.

Unique to the Red Course are two island greens at Hole 6 and Hole 14. This course is often the site of corporate tournaments due to its promise of a fair test of golf at any level of play. Despite the obstacles, the Red is probably best suited for shorter hitters, women and beginners.
