South Course #4

recognized as one of the nation's premier municipal golf facilities

Torrey Pines. The name itself stirs the imagination of golf enthusiasts all over the world. Situated atop cliffs towering above the Pacific Ocean in San Diego, California, golfers marvel at the views of the coastline and deep ravines. Nature lovers can spot wildlife and the famous Torrey Pines trees that are indigenous to the area.

Torrey Pines, long recognized as one of the nation's foremost municipal golf facilities, is truly a "golfer's paradise".  Bounded by mountains to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the west, the seaside courses are often swept by sunshine or by rain, fog and chilling winds.

Playing Torrey Pines South means walking the same fairways as PGA Fellas like Tiger, playing the same bunkers as Sergio, putting the same greens as Phil.

In 2001, celebrated golf course designer Rees Jones was given the task of remodeling the South Course, an endeavor that has been met with almost universal acclaim. Torrey Pines South is long, challenging, unspeakably beautiful.

First of all, most golfers should understand that the South course is not a four-hour course. The length, the kikuyaya grass, it's just very difficult for the average golfer. Know that before you start. We will mark off some of the canyons as laterals - the pro's don't get that - but you can only do so much. Visitors just have to know, it's fun and fair, but it's tough.

Fog, rain and wind often sweep the seaside courses, testing even the most seasoned players skill. The course takes its name from the indigenous Torrey Pine which is native to the area and to Santa Rosa Island. The tree is distinguished by having clusters of five pine needles.

This Municipal Golf Course has brought the best golfers in the world to their knees with its notorious rough, deep bunkers, undulating greens, long par 3's and epic par 4's.
